The Precision Farming Development Centre (initially Plasticulture Development Centre) was established in December, 1995 in the Department of Soil Science and Water Management, Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan Himachal Pradesh under centrally sponsored scheme for Use of Plastics in Agriculture under National Committee on Plasticulture Applications (NCPA), which has been renamed as National Committee on Plasticulture Applications in Horticulture (NCPAH) in 2001-02 under Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The centre has come out with  specific recommendations on micro irrigation, protected cultivation, anti-hail nets and plastic mulching. Under transfer of technology, a Technology Display Centre has been established in the Jawahar Lal Nehru Communication Centre of the University, where all technologies related to precision farming are being displayed to provide all information under one roof. Since inception, Precision Farming Development Centre has  organized 88 farmers and 22 officer's training programmes on and off campus in collaboration with State Department of Horticulture and Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh benefiting 2654 farmers and 480 officers, respectively. Apart from training programmes, 20 awareness-cum-demonstration programmes were also organized during  various National and International fairs in the state. For monitoring the technology adoption on plasticulture applications, more than 300 farmers adopting the technology were visited by faculty and staff of the centre. So far 10 demonstrations on plasticulture applications in Horticulture at farmer's field in Bilaspur, Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla and Una districts have been undertaken. The farmers are given technical guidance and help for proper care and maintenance of micro irrigation system and other plasticulture applications for better crop quality and production. Apart from this, 2 training manuals on polyhouse cultivtion and 12 crop specific brochures for using Plasticulture Application have been published for field functionaries and farmers use
