The department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, founded in 1987, is existing as a principal department in the College of Forestry of the University. The department imparts excellent facilities in Teaching, Research and Extension in the field of Forestry. Well-equipped laboratories, highly qualified faculty and intimate links with local and national research institutes are the strengths. Over the years the department has earned national repute in Forestry education. Our vision is to provide world-class, nationally and internationally recognized knowledge and leadership for Forestry issues.
The department offer teaching courses to the undergraduate (B.Sc. Honours in Forestry or Horticulture) and postgraduate (MSc and PhD with different specialisations) programmes of the university. Postgraduate degrees require theory and research fulfillment. The department has enrolled international students from Nepal, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Syria, Ghana etc. for postgraduate degrees.
The department offer opportunities to undertake supervised research in diverse fields of Forestry at Masters (MSc degrees in Silviculture, Plantation Technology and Agroforestry) and Doctoral (Ph.D degrees in Silviculture and Agroforestry) level. Research degrees provide a thorough training in the field of Silviculture and Agroforestry through original exploration and experiment. The precise focus of research is agreed between the supervisor and the student, to suit the student’s particular interests and needs. During the first year, students may be required to undertake some formal research training to familiarise him or her to the diverse conditions of Himachal Pradesh and India. Throughout the research period students will be encouraged to attend specialist seminars and conferences. At Doctoral level the students need to pass written and oral comprehensive examinations before defending his/her research through a presentation before full faculty. The research culminates in a thesis which sets out the conclusions of the research undertaken which is evaluated by external examiners. Finally he/she defends his/her research before advisory committee and external examiner.
The department possesses potential faculty strength across the breadth of forest science which is actively engaged in doing teaching and fundamental research in interlinked areas: Seed Technology; Nursery Technology; Plantation Forestry; Forest Regeneration; Forest Management; Forest Productivity; Quantitative Silviculture; GIS and Remote Sensing; Agroforestry Practices and Management and, Rangeland Science.
The department transfers technology to the users like, Farmers/Orchardists, State Forest Department and different voluntary organizations.
