The Regional Horticultural Research Station, Jachh was established in 1987 after transfer of 62 acres of land from the Department of Agriculture and further strengthened with the inception of National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) during 1988-92 to undertake need based location specific research and extension programmes in sub-mountain low hill sub-tropical areas (Zone-I) of Himachal Pradesh.
The sub-mountain and low hill sub-tropical agro-climatic zone (Zone-I) of Himachal Pradesh though only has 16.40 per cent of the total geographical area of the state but is inhabited by 36.68 per cent of the total population and represent 49.78 per cent of the total cultivated areas and 71.75 per cent of total irrigated area of the state. Climatically, this zone is highly suitable for growing of various tropical & sub-tropical fruits like Mango, Litchi, Citrus, Aonla, low chilling Peaches, Pear, Ber, Fig etc. Further, the climate in these hills being milder than the plains offers comparative advantages of growing vegetables like Tomato, Cucurbits, Radishes, Cole crops, Onion, Okra etc. more than once in a year over plains. Agro-forestry is a way of life of its inhabitants.
The temperature goes as high as 43.50C in summer and as low as minus 0.10C during winter months. However, the mean summer and winter temperatures average at 29.30 C and 13.60 C, respectively. The mean annual rainfall received by the area is 1500 mm.
Mandate
- To serve as research centre in low hills subtropical areas for developing strategies for the improvement of fruits, vegetables, flowers, forest species, medicinal plants etc.
- To develop horticulture and forestry based farming systems to increase and stabilize farm production through efficient use of natural and human resources.
- To identify socio-economic constraints for horticultural development including farm forestry in sub-tropical low hill and valley areas of Himachal Pradesh.
- To disseminate the latest production technologies of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, forest species, medicinal plants etc. to the farmer/growers through trainings, demonstrations, farm visits, farmers’ fairs, field days etc.
Thrust Area
- Collection, evaluation and conservation of germplasm of different sub-tropical fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants for effective varietal improvement programme.
- Niche based evaluation and recommendation of different varieties of fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants.
- Standardization of technology and package of practice for growing different crops under biotic and abiotic stress conditions.
- Identification of new/ high value crops for growing in sub-tropical area and development of their production technology for nutritional, health and financial security.
- Survey and surveillance of major insect, pest and diseases of fruits and vegetables and development of integrated disease and pest management technology modules.
- Establishment of gene bank of high yielding varieties.
- Strengthening of existing nursery units to enhance mass multiplication of quality planting material so as to meet the ever increasing demand of farmers of the state.
- Training and extension services for farmers and extension functionaries of Govt. departments to disseminate generated technology.
Aim
- Development of sound research and extension education base in sub tropical horticulture, forestry and allied sectors in Zone-I of Himachal Pradesh.
- Dissemination of generated technologies to farming community through location specific transfer of technology modules.
Mission
- To undertake need based location specific research and extension programmes in sub-montane low hill sub-tropical areas (Zone-1) of Himachal Pradesh for productivity enhancement and economic prosperity of farmers.
Location Map
The Regional Horticultural Research Station, Jachh is situated on Pathankot -Mandi National Highway (NH-22) at an altitude of 428 m amsl. It is 20 km away from Pathankot and around 85 km from Dharamshala and 70 km from Gaggal airport. The maximum temperature goes as high as 43.5˚ C and minimum as low as -0.1˚C.The mean summer and winter temperatures average at 29.3˚ C and 13.6˚ C. The mean annual rainfall received by the area is 1500 mm.
