College of Horticulture & Forestry , Thunag, Mandi at Gohar (Gudhari)

The College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag at Gohar (Gudhari), District Mandi was established on 08.03.2019 as the fourth constituent college under the aegis of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan. Initially, it was set up as the Regional Horticulture and Forestry Development and Extension Centre, Thunag at Village Panicha on 11.09.2018 and later upgraded to the College of Horticulture and Centre of Excellence for Horticulture Research and Extension on 08.03.2019, before being renamed as the College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag. Recently, due to a cloudburst disaster at Thunag, the college has been temporarily shifted to Gohar (Gudhari), District Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

The college emphasizes innovative teaching methods, hands-on training and field-based learning to ensure the holistic development of students. It is dedicated to education, research and extension in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied sciences. At present, the college offers Undergraduate (B.Sc. Honours) programmes in Horticulture and Forestry. The campus at Gohar is situated 31 km from Mandi, on the Nerchowk-Gohar Road, at an elevation of 1316 m above mean sea level.

The first batch of the B.Sc. (Honours) Horticulture four-year programme commenced in August 2019 with an intake of 69 students. Currently, 319 students are pursuing degrees in B.Sc. (Honours) Horticulture and B.Sc. (Honours) Forestry. The college is well equipped with modern facilities, including smart classrooms, a library, conference hall, laboratories, a playground, and a badminton court. It has a dedicated faculty strength of 31 highly qualified members actively engaged in teaching, research, and extension activities.

To build an institution of excellence for learning in Horticulture, Forestry and allied disciplines with a purpose to create human resource capable of meeting present and future needs of farm science education, industry and other stake holders.

Goal

Educate and train human resource at undergraduate level in frontier areas of horticulture, Forestry and allied sciences.

Himachal Pradesh with diverse agro-climatic zones from temperate to subtropical, and high-altitude cold deserts has a vast potential for cultivation of a wide range of agricultural, horticultural and forestry crops. For improving production and productivity of these crops, the college is actively engaged in human resource development, and generation of eco-region-specific technologies for ensuring remunerative returns to the farming community. To promote horticulture and forestry in the temperatel areas of Himachal Pradesh, the College of Horticulture & Forestry, Thunag (Mandi) was established as the fourth constituent college of the University with the mandate of imparting quality undergraduate teaching along with improvement in research and extension facilities for meeting the demands of growing population for safe and nutritionally rich food under the changing climatic scenario.
