Educate and train human resource at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in frontier areas of horticulture and allied sciences;
The above goals have evolved as a result of our contribution in the field of agro-horticultural education and research during the past more than four decades. The growth of horticulture in the past has guided us in prioritizing our goals. At it’s inception, the institution had the prioritiesin agriculture in its focus, but Today the focus is horticulture centric for sustainable ecosystem. Since the start of this college in 1985, as many as 447 students in B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture, 123 students in master’s programme in different discipline and 294 student in Doctoral Programme have been enrolled in different discipline. Till date 5334 student have passed out from this college in different discipline. The student of this college got admission in reputed university in the country and outside of country.
The College of Horticulture is a premier college of the Dr. Y.S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan in the state for imparting graduate and post graduate education and conduct of research in all branches of horticulture and its allied fields. The major mandate of the College, therefore, is human resource development in the areas of horticulture and related disciplines. The College of Horticulture came into existence with the establishment of Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry on December 1, 1985, but it has its origin in the erstwhile Himachal Agriculture College and Research Institute, Solan established in 1962, with affiliation to the Punjab University, Chandigarh. The need for such a college arose from the basic consideration that the agro-climatic conditions of hills differ greatly from those of the plains and that the human resource trained in a college located in hills will have better understanding and exposure to hill horticulture and will prove more useful for its development. Horticultural graduates and postgraduates are taught to develop and use knowledge of sustainable practices, new technologies, science and research to produce plants and crops and this knowledge is applied to post harvest practices. With the world's population continuing to increase and climate change impacting upon production, it is vital to continue to investigate new growing systems and to establish new crops which can be grown sustainably and transported to market with minimal losses. Worldwide horticultural scenario is truly advancing. The mechanical advancement and imminent metaverse is changing the lifestyle of people which create enormous demand of horticulturists. I accept we are at a critical crossroads throughout the entire existence of horticultural education.
The College of Horticulture is dedicated to offering high-quality education and has gone to considerable lengths to achieve educational excellence. The college’s academic offerings give students an opportunity to work on the farm to explore the practical knowledge, bringing farmers’ experiences to the classroom and resolving challenges through student- farmer collaboration and thus making them ready for the future challenges.The basic mandate of the college is to develop appropriate human resource for carrying out various horticultural activities in the state and to develop relevant technologies suitable for horticultural activities for the welfare of farming community of the state and to disseminate horticultural technologies, sustainable development of horticulture among the various stakeholders. The college has been established with perspective to impart education in different branches of horticulture and to further the advancement of learning by undertaking research in horticulture and allied activities.I sincerely hope that the education imparted in this college will help in building secure, sustainable and quality future of the state, country and the world through its well trained graduates and postgraduates.Jai Hind
