VC Message

Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan established on December 1, 1985 became the first Horticulture and Forestry University of Asia and dedicated to Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The need for this institution arose from the basic consideration that the agro-climatic conditions of hills differ greatly from those of the plains and that the human resource trained in a college located in hills will have better understanding and exposure to hill agriculture, and will prove more useful for the development of mountainous small holders. The magnificent growth of this mountain community has been noticed at the national level also. Keeping in view its importance as a national asset, late Sh. Rajiv Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India dedicated the University to the nation on April 30, 1988. This university has firm foundation with independent Directorate of Research, Directorate of Extension Education along with four promising seats of learning in the form of College of Horticulture and College of Forestry at Nauni, College of Horticulture and Forestry at Neri, Hamirpur and College of Horticulture & Forestry, Thunag, Mandi. This University has its roots in the Himachal Agriculture College, Solan established in 1962, with affiliation to the Panjab University, Chandigarh. It is a long journey of more than five decades with different names but with a single focused goal to develop quality human resource and technologies in the field of horticulture, forestry and its allied fields. This university with a magnificent growth has given a lead to the country through a roadmap for development of horticulture and forestry. This has resulted in the opening of many universities of Horticulture and Forestry in the country. It has still an edge in many areas with its rich scientific and human resources developed in the last five decades. High academic standards of this institution have attracted a large number of foreign students from countries like Iran, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Syria, Mozambique, Zambia, Bhutan, Nepal etc. in different degree courses. The Alumni of this university have excelled in different institutions and departments in our State, in other States and also on many important positions in Government of India, in MNCs within India and abroad. Till now, they have served the nation in various capacities and notable among these are the prestigious positions. The university has focussed approach for human resource development under which faculty and students are going on exposure visit to premier institutes within the country and countries like Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Germany, USA. Simultaneously the infrastructure of the university has been upgraded and new facilities like Smart classrooms, Virtual Classrooms, Language Lab, E-vehicle, Open Air Theatre, Meditation Center and Alumni Engagement Centre has been created. Agri- Incubation Center on Medicinal Plants and Agri-Incubation Centre on Food Processing have been created to promote entrepreneurship and startups to meet local demand specially in hill states. Now the university has special emphasis for developing technologies like High density plantation, Exotic vegetable, natural farming to increase productivity, crop intensification to meet local requirements and cater to demand for the produce from the state. I strongly feel the need to connect and reconnect with the notable alumni who are excelling in the country and worldwide in different fields of horticulture and forestry industries. We are in a process to develop a mechanism to define the role and importance of the Alumni in the development of the institute and undergraduate and postgraduate students of the university. An emotional connect of one alumni with their parent institution will yield much more to the university than any other form of support.
